I am very thankful to my God the Creator, my Savior and Lord Jesus Christ for the privilege of being able to speak to you about the most important thing in our lives. I pray and hope that God will touch your hearts and that you will seek out a relationship with Jesus Christ who is the giver of true joy, peace and most above all eternal life, and if you are already in Christ I hope that you may be encouraged in Him. As I will be sharing some things with you please remember that I am not fluent in French and that I may not fully relate to you because of the differences in culture, background, age, and that I am just a human with a limited mind trying to share some things with you about a unlimited, all knowing, all powerful, all loving and eternal God.
I. The importance of being well informed to judge any matter:
How and when can we give a valid and good judgment of someone?
Can we give a rightful judgment about someone or something that we do not know that well?
A. The First Example – Doctor
Imagine the profession of the Doctor. In order for the doctor to give a right diagnose he needs to run a few checks and tests on the patient; he needs to familiarize himself with the problem, so he would give a good medicine. With experience, the doctor is much more able to identify what is the problem and to give quicker a valid judgment. On person who is in the medical field talked about a famous specialist who receives cases from all over the world and all he has to do is look at the paper and he can tell right away what it is, and give a right diagnose. My question is though how long has he spent studying that problem, that part of the body in order to know it that well. It didn’t come on it’s own.
B. The Second Example – AutoMechanic Today things are much more computerized so I understand that it is not the same as before, because today you can just plug the car up to a computer and he will tell you right away what’s wrong. However, that was not this way always. Not too many years ago if your car broke down or you had to take it to the mechanic unless you are on of those guys who is do it yourself men and fixes everything by himself. When the car would come to the mechanic. Before the mechanic starts working on it and fixing it, he needs to get to know what the problem is. If your car does not want to start, you may think it is the battery, or the starter, but it may be that it is the fuel pump, this happened to me once. Fortunately, the mechanic was my friend, and a girl, now this is interesting when a boy is helped by a girl to get his car fixed. However, this showed me that we had to check this, and that, run some tests to find out where the problem is and what the problem is.
C. In conclusion of this taught I want you to understand the reason why I have presented you these two examples. It is the principle that we cannot know for sure what we are dealing with until we have not given it enough and fair evaluation. In order to give a good judgment of something, whether it is a medical problem a mechanical problem and at last a person, we need to become familiar with what we are dealing with. This is the principle that I wanted to show you with this two examples.
II. Are you well informed about the identity of Christ?
So what about Christ? Do you understand that he was this person who claimed to be God and who changed the course of history?
A. His claims:
John 8:58 (referring to Exodus 3:14)
Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am."
Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’"
There more statements where Christ make such a claim. John 13:21; 8:24,28.
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. He who believes in him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.
B. What to make of them? Let’s logically examine them!
So we just heard what Jesus said about himself. What conclusion will make about his statements. Either we can believe that He is who He says He is, or that He’s a liar because He is not telling the truth, or that he’s crazy.
CS Lewis, among many others, addresses this in one of his books.
C.S. Lewis: Mere Christianity
“He is humble and meek” and we believe Him; not noticing that, if he were merely a man, humility and meekness are the very last characteristics we could attribute to some of His sayings.
I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ”I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merly a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg-or else he would be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
Some people want to say that Jesus is a good moral teacher. However Jesus made sure that this option is not really available. You see here how important it is to see that if someone claims about somebody to be a good moral teacher, they are eliminating the liar and the crazy option. A good moral teacher wouldn’t be a good moral teacher if he is lying! And good moral teachers can not be crazy!
III. Why are people not accepting Christ then if He is God?
This question could be put in many different ways and address so many areas that it is hard to answer all of them, but let me give you a few things that are most common.
A. Because they have seen some Christians pursuing their selfish motives:
(People doing things in the name of God, but they do not really have to do anything with God and his will.)
There are many ways that we can get a bad impression of someone. I do not know that I can even mention all of them. You think for yourself about how it has been an experience in your life. Let me give just a few examples of how Christ and His way was stained and was given a bad impression and name. We can talk about the Crusades and the damage it had done, that was not what Jesus was about, but people seeing the cross they identify it with Christians and there you go, Christ and His way has a bad name. Now at this point I would like to define the word Christian in the meaning of the word. To define that more in depth would take one sermon on itself but here is just a short version. A Christian is someone how follows Christ and His teaching. What does Jesus say about who is a Christian, Jesus never used this term. What does Christ say about who is a true follower.
(I could use here John 13:35). By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Just because someone claims to act in the name of God doesn’t mean he is following the will of God.
B. Because they see the disunity: (it can discourage people to seek out for the truth)
Today there are so many churches, how in the world can I know which one is the right one? That can already stain and discourage someone not to even want to consider investigating this Christ because the people who claim to believe in Him are so disunited. How do you answer a teenager who asks a preacher how will I know whether I am in the right faith or not? Why would a teenager ask that, because what he sees in the world is not matching up to the logic one God one Faith?
How much do you want to know the truth?
C. Because of the hypocrisy in our churches:
This is for us history, but what leaves a even bigger stain is what we experience today, and the way we come in contact with Christians, the people who are supposedly following Christ. Very often, it is the hypocrisy that it is a turn off to unbelievers. (define the word).
One band that claims to be Christians has inserted a verse into the beginning of one of their songs and it says “the greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny them by their life style, that is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable”.
Here I would add one thing were we need to draw a line of division. There are people who realize that it is very hard to follow Christ, but they know that His way is the only true way. The Writer Tolstoy put it well. So let me quote him.
I want to read a part of a well known Russian writer who was trying to follow Christ. Now I’ll read a quote from Tolstoy that can be helpful to anyone frustrated with the church’s imperfections. (Soul Survivor pg. 130)
People don’t care to know! They are not lovers of truth!
In Conclusion a few things about Christ!
One of the biggest evidences of Jesus’ Divinity for me was His character, when I read in the New Testament and the way Jesus responded and treated people was nothing like I have seen or heard before. Christ is the King, but He is also a servant. It is absolutely amazing the way Jesus uses His power, He never fails to do the right thing, He is perfect. He stood up for those that were suppressed and made sure that those who were suppressing knew that this is not the right way of doing things.
Read for your self and find out! Do you want to know such a person? Why wouldn’t you want to get know someone who is that good!
You know when I was younger I was kind of ashamed of Jesus, or maybe felt uncomfortable with talking openly about Him, it was because I didn’t really know Him. Today I am not ashamed of Him, because He is my best friend, and even more He is my Lord and Savior. He showed me what true love is, He blessed my life abundantly and is continuing to bless it. It just enough to know Him!
Now we’re done, but it’s your responsibility if you love truth to go home and read the Bible, investigate who Jesus is for yourselves. If you have questions, ask. Don’t give up. It is the most important thing that you can do in your life! A relationship with your Creator makes all the difference, not just in this world but for eternity!
One thing that Christ told to the Jews that believed in Him:
“Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’” (John 8:31,32).
Jesus claimed that He is truth, he told to Pilate in the Gospel of John “Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice." Are you a friend and seeker of truth? If yes then what will you do with Christ?
